PRESENTATION OF WORK AND TALK AT ACERT conference, September 2013
ACERT invited the DreamMakes to present work at their anual conference. Ladislav and Eva attend and present a selection of the work and talk about the project.
Report from the ACERT conference describes:
‘Eva Sajovic spoke about this UK-wide project by young people between the ages of 13 and 19, based around the themes of Identity, Community, Dreams and Aspirations. It was designed by 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning and Eva Sajovic and was supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation who provided social cohesion funding. Eva was accompanied Ladislav, one of the participants from Bolton. The project also involved students from Glasgow, Newham and Peterborough. Some of the work from the project was displayed at the ACERT conference. Information on the project can be seen at http://dreammakersuk.tumblr.com/
The project blog is currently being designed into a website and a book. See also http://nepan.wordpress.com/2013/05/24/participation-photography-and-the-politics-of-space-a-case-study-of-the-dreammakers-project-by-eva-sajovic/ DreamMakers was conceived as a way of building bridges between communities and many of the participants came from Gypsy, Roma or Traveller backgrounds. Ladislav was instrumental in pushing the work forward in Bolton. He liked the aspect of the project that involved helping other people. It gave others an opportunity to learn about Gypsies. It also gave him the chance to undertake 5 days of training for youth leaders. In response to questions and discussion Eva explained that the project was focused more on identity than on ethnicity. It was about avoiding stereotypes. In Bolton the museum is interested in taking over the whole exhibition for their archive as a way of welcoming new communities. The British Council is inter ested in using the project as a contribution to a training programme.
One of the audience asked if religion was an aspect of the project and whether there was a danger that children got just a superficial idea if they focused on symbols of religions and cultures. Did the project gain much in terms of relationships and communities? Eva said that through the project friendships developed and that these had enabled more in depth exploration.’ (ACERT, 2013).
